tintype photography FAQs

  • Yes, our studio is open by appointment only.
You can book an appointment on our scheduling page, here.

  • Whether it’s a solo of them or if parents will be in the photo with them, kids can be very tricky to shoot. We are not able to do anything on our end to hold your child still or keep them from making large movements. We are of a very “let it be what it is” mindset when it comes to kids and we will not correct the movements they make once we've loaded the film. If you are able to, we will ask you to hold your child because that makes it easier to keep them still, but please keep in mind that most kids are wiggly and if they are moving it will be very distracting for you while you are trying to hold still. If you’ve seen a really great photo of a child from us it’s because the child was calm and still and the parents were cooperative with our direction. If you don’t think your child or you will be capable of this, then we do not recommend booking a session with your child in the photo. We also ask that if your child is old enough to understand, you do not coach them or give them any direction on what to do with their face. Kids look best in these portraits when they are natural!

In our experience, the easiest ages for this process are babies 6 months-2 years and kids ages 5 and up.
Ages 2-4 tend to be less patient ;)

  • If you are able to hold your pet (standing) then we can absolutely do it! There will be an additional $25 fee for pets. If you have a larger pet, or if you would like a photo of your pet by itself, it's not something we can accommodate in the studio at this time.

  • You truly can wear anything! It is completely up to you if you want to look modern, get fancy, be casual, or do a theme. Novelty items (like a hat or dramatic necklace) look great, themed outfits are fun, patterns/prints/textures add a lot of depth, and you are more then welcome to bring any props you would like. Feel free to check out our portrait gallery, or our Instagram for inspiration.

Tones: Red tones will translate looking dark, and blue tones will translate looking light.

Glasses: We will strongly encourage you to remove them. This is for a few reasons - with strobe lighting it can be difficult to not catch a reflection in the lens, any glasses with blue light blocker or UV protection will look dark (like sunglasses), dirty or scratched glasses can affect eye clarity. Since the eyes are the focal point of the photo, we do not recommend distracting from them.

SPF Blocker/Sunscreen: We strongly recommend not to wear it as your skin will show up darker then it’s natural tone, double check your face makeup/cover up if you are wearing any to make sure it doesn’t contain SPF blocker.

Red Lipstick: Red tones show up dark, a lot of people like the look of that but we just want you to be aware :)

Text/Logos/Badges Etc: Our historic camera does flip all images horizontally. As a result, these things will show up backwards. We don’t mind it, but if you do then we’d recommend to avoid wearing anything you wouldn’t want to show up flipped.

  • At this time this is not a possibility in our studio due to the restrictions with the process and the stress it puts on the photographer. Please know that this is not because we don’t want to make a beautiful picture of your entire family together. Since we are still using historical equipment, our depth of field is extremely shallow and the more people in the image the more likely the quality and sharpness will suffer.

We recommend purchasing a package, and splitting into groups. You can frame or display the photos side by side so everyone is still all together.

  • It is common in tintype photographs to see imperfections such as particles of dust, fingerprints, small scratches, and other small “happy defects”. These are what give these portraits character and makes each one unique. We will not do reshoots for any of these common imperfections.

We will suggest a reshoot under the following circumstances: if someone in the portrait blinks. or if there is an obvious quality defect in the portrait. Quality defects are at the discretion of the photographer.

We strongly recommend that you take our direction on posing, what to do with your face & hands etc. Our goal is for you to be happy with your portrait - if you do not like the photo for personal reasons (facial expressions/posing) please speak up! We are happy to reshoot for you if time allows. For this type of reshoot a small fee will be applied to cover cost of materials.

Reshoots will only be allowed during the same session. Once you leave the studio the session has ended so please communicate with us before we wrap up!

  • Tintype Photography: Our prices start at $150 for a 5”x7” tintype portrait including 1-3 people.

We also offer discounted packages if you would like multiple poses, and these are available on our booking page, here.

  • The entire appointment usually takes 30 mins - 1 hour depending on how many portraits you’re booking.

Our exposure time is instant, so you don’t have to hold your pose for more than 3 seconds - however, you will need to be seated and not make large movements for up to 6 minutes while you are in focus and the film is being prepared. After taking your portrait, you’ll receive the digital files by email within 3 days. The physical plate will be shipped to you within 2 weeks after your session.

Please keep in mind, that this process is very old and not an exact science…so on rare occasions there could be malfunctions and we may need to reshoot your portrait. This would be done during your appointment time which may increase the length of time you are here, so please plan accordingly (just in case).

  • Upon your arrival we will take some time to chat with you about any of your needs/concerns, and go through the process with you. Matt (the photographer) will then pose you and adjust his camera/lighting. He will ask you to sit still while he gets the camera into focus. Next he will go to the darkroom and begin preparing the film. This can take up to 6 minutes and during this time you can relax and blink etc, but not make any large movements. Matt will then bring out the plate coated in film, focus one more time, count to 3, and FLASH (it is shockingly bright…)

At that point, your work is all done and you can move and relax while we finish preparing your one of a kind photo. Matt will take it back into the darkroom to develop it for 2-3 minutes, and then he will bring it out in its negative form. You can watch and record at this point while he puts it into a fixer bath and the negative turns into a positive while you watch!

After taking your portrait, you’ll receive a high resolution digital copy by email. The physical plate will be shipped to you within 2 weeks of your sesseon. We also offer paper prints of your tintype, which you’ll be able to order directly from the emailed digital copy of your session.

  • Currently, we are offering two original plate sizes - 5”x7” or 8”x10”

We can make larger paper prints of your tintype portrait, up to 13”x19”, for an additional fee.

  • Revisit your confirmation email and click the "reschedule/cancel appointment" button.

NOTE: YOUR DEPOSIT/PAYMENT WILL NOT BE AUTOMATICALLY REFUNDED AND YOU WILL NEED TO CONTACT US TO RECEIVE IT. CANCELLATION/RESCHEDULING MUST BE DONE 24 HOURS PRIOR TO QUALIFY FOR YOUR DEPOSIT TO ROLL OVER OR BE REFUNDED.
